The commencement of construction on Masdar Institute Phase II was formally announced in November 2010, a project that is expected to take 18 months; the Masdar HQ building and The Courtyard Building, which will be the first commercial building in the city, are expected to be completed by 2013 and 2012, respectively. These represent three large projects that are moving ahead and that will be much larger than what has been built so far. Just the next phase of the Masdar Institute campus is 35% larger than the existing campus, thereby more than doubling the campus.
Put another way, just these three projects -- to be delivered by 2013 and which are just a part of the city’s Phase 1 development -- will increase the size of the city six-fold, from 35,000sqm of construction floor area in 2010 to nearly 200,000sqm in 2013.
Phase 1, which is scheduled for completion in 2015, is expected to have 1 million sqm of gross floor area that includes space for commercial, residential, retail, community and Masdar Institute, and will be home to 7,000 residents and 15,000 commuters.
