Sustainable mobility
Masdar City is leading the way in smart, sustainable transportation by embedding clean mobility solutions into the core of its urban design. With electric autonomous shuttles, Eco-Buses, pedestrian-first planning, and walkable green spaces, the city creates an environment that encourages innovation and supports the next generation of urban transport technologies.
By fostering a living testbed for future-focused mobility, Masdar City is helping shape how cities around the world move—efficiently, sustainably, and with people at the center.
Transportation knits people and cities
together. Masdar City has created an interconnected system of sustainable mobility
options, including a pedestrian-friendly city, that are paving the way to a greener,
more sustainable future—one ride at a time.
Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries (SAVI)
Masdar City is honored to be the chosen host of the Smart and Autonomous Vehicle
Industries (SAVI) cluster in Abu Dhabi. Endorsed by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin
Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi
Executive Council, SAVI is set to transform the landscape of smart and autonomous
vehicles across air, land, and sea mobility.
SAVI is poised to supercharge innovation and the commercialization of these technologies
within the UAE, facilitating their global reach through advanced facilities and
supportive services in a conducive regulatory environment. It is expected to contribute
between AED 90 billion to AED 120 billion to the UAE's economy and generate 30,000 to
50,000 jobs, igniting economic growth and opportunities.
The SAVI cluster brings together key stakeholders, providing academia, test zones, R&D
labs, certification facilities, and more, connected through Abu Dhabi's logistics
network. Local regulators ensure an enabling regulatory framework for air, land, and sea
applications.
This initiative is designed to accelerate green mobility services, driving the UAE and
the world toward a zero-emissions future. SAVI is a significant addition to our
commitment to a more sustainable future.

Personal Rapid
Transit (PRT) System
Our Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system was the first on-demand, autonomous electric transportation system in the world.
more about PRT
The PRT is a zero-carbon
emission transportation solution. The
entire network generates no harmful
emissions. And as the PRT removes the
need for personal vehicles, the PRT's net
carbon impact is zero.
The Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system at Masdar City is a form of driverless transport that uses electric pods that are fully emission-free and require no charging between trips. Designed to simplify travel within the city, these pods operate through an on-demand system, helping to eliminate waiting times, traffic congestion, and pollution.
Functioning as a sustainable alternative to personal vehicles, the PRT system supports Masdar City’s goal of reducing emissions and promoting a cleaner, quieter urban environment. Powered by smart autonomous technology, the pods offer a safe, smooth, and efficient ride that is ideal for daily commutes or short trips within the city.

more about Navya

A driverless, safe, reliable and comfortable public transport vehicle designed to satisfy the specific needs of a driverless vehicle whilst optimizing on navigation and safety functions for the first and last mile.
Once a cornerstone of the Masdar City legacy,
the Navya has transitioned from active service. This
transition is part of our ever-evolving landscape of
sustainable mobility and technology.
As an integral part of Masdar City’s sustainable transport network, the autonomous NAVYA shuttles demonstrated how electric, driverless mobility could offer a more relaxing and eco-friendlier commute. Featuring smart technology powered by sensors and GPS, the shuttles provided a safe, smooth, and comfortable ride, even during peak hours.
Although the NAVYA shuttles have now transitioned from active service, they remain a key chapter in Masdar City’s story. This evolution reflects our ongoing commitment to testing and implementing advanced, sustainable mobility solutions—keeping Masdar City at the forefront of innovation in urban transport.

more about eco bus
Assembled using the latest technology, it deployed several “firsts,” including the latest (at the time) Siemens-built motor technology, which allowed a lighter construction and lower energy usage, as well as water-cooled batteries to help overcome extreme temperatures. Air conditioning systems were designed to optimize battery usage, which were integrated into an extra-light aluminum body. Electrochromic windows help block the sun and help make air conditioning more efficient. Its range per charge is 150 kilometers.
The Eco-Bus has transitioned beyond active service while leaving a lasting mark on our sustainable mobility initiatives.
As part of Masdar City’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility, the Eco-Bus represented a major step forward in low-emission public transport. Built using advanced technology, it introduced several firsts, including a Siemens-built motor that allowed for a lighter structure and reduced energy consumption. It also featured water-cooled batteries to handle extreme temperatures and air conditioning systems designed to optimize battery efficiency. The lightweight aluminium body and electrochromic windows further improved passenger comfort and energy performance. The vehicle had a range of up to 150 kilometres per charge.
Fully electric and powered by AI, the Eco-Bus produced zero emissions, eliminating the need for fuel and reducing noise and pollution. It was built for safe, comfortable, and reliable daily commutes while contributing to a cleaner urban environment.
Although it is no longer in active service, the Eco-Bus remains an important part of Masdar City’s sustainable mobility journey. Its legacy continues to shape how we integrate smart and clean transportation into daily life, supporting a healthier city for both people and the planet.
